Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema has been sentenced by a French court to one year in prison for sexually assaulting former French team-mate Mathieu Valbuna.

In the 2015 trial, the 33-year-old was sentenced to five and a half years by the French national team.

Benzema was not arraigned in Paris Versey hours before Real Madrid took over the Sheriff Tiraspol in the Champions League match against Moldova.

His defense team announced plans to appeal immediately.

“I am shocked by the verdict,” one of his lawyers, Silva Cormir, told reporters in court.

Prosecutor Benzema has been sentenced to 10 months in prison by a French court for plotting to overthrow the French national team.

Benzema did not attend the trial last month, citing professional obligations.

French Football Federation president Noel has been charged with felony criminal mischief for allegedly trying to seduce a minor with Real Madrid.

However, it is unclear whether Benzema’s conviction returned to the national team earlier this year after a long hiatus.

Benzema has scored nine times since being called up by French coach Didier Deshamps in the Euro 2020 final – a year later due to the Corona virus outbreak – making him the fifth highest goalscorer in the history of Les Blaise.
